To say “SEO has changed a bit” would be a large understatement. Algorithm changes from Google’s Panda and later Penguin made SEO professionals take a step back. Now instead of rapid link-building and keyword-obsessed ways, SEO professionals need to start looking at creating quality organic content rather then tagging every little piece of content.

Taking a step back and looking at the industry and how it has changed in 2012 and what the landscape is going to look like in 2013 is what SEOs’ should be doing this time of the year. This post is intended to dispel four very common SEO myths that should certainly be left behind in 2012: so lets not waste anymore time and get started!

First common myth is that companies/pages need to rank #1! SERP result page studies of click-through rates and user behavior have shown that searchers favor the top search results — particularly the top four listings. However, the study also has shown that on subsequent pages, being listed toward the top of the page shows similar click behavior. Now with search results also prevalent with author profiles and rich snippets, click-through rates are proving to be higher on those listings even if they don’t appear among the top results.

The second myth that is no longer a valid belief is keywords need to be an exact match. Keywords definitely do not need to be repeated constantly throughout a particular piece of content. In titles in particular, it’s far more important to use keywords in the way it makes most sense. Focus on write an attention grabbing headline that focuses on clearly explaining what that particular piece of content is about. One of the worst thing one can do is to awkwardly frame a title around one keyword phrase or, worse, one that forcibly repeats a keyword phrase. Keep in mind that this rule applies to not only headlines but content on the page, too.

The third myth is that the H1 tag is the most important on page SEO semantic. Think of web structure on your page as an outline. It’s a tiered approach to presenting information to a user and just as important to search engines. Tagging the title in either a H1, H2, or even a H3, tag has little to no influence on your overall SEO. In fact, that title tags are essentially only used for styling purposes. The H1 (heading 1) tag is simply part of your CSS, which a designer puts together to reference what font styling and size will be applied to a particular piece of content.

The fourth and final myth (even though there are many more) is the misguided belief that more links is still somehow more important to more content. This myth is possibly the furthest from the truth then all four of these. True SEO professionals are well aware that content is not only king but emperor! I am not discounting the fact that quality inbound links aren’t still important but it is quality not quantity that is more important now. Writing purposeful and relevant content in a consistent basis has or at least should become top priority in the this ever changing industry.

Like stated earlier these are several other myths not discussed in this post but these are four beliefs that should not be carried forward into your 2013 SEO initiatives.

How to guide for leveraging multiple data sources to create great blog content.

Ever have problems crafting pertinent blog topics that will resonate well with you customers? Often the most difficult part of maintaining and leveraging your blog properly is consistently creating engaging content for your followers. What if there is a way to see what people really wanted to read?

Lets first start with primary data that you may or may not already have internally. The amount of data that can be mined out of your own website analytics is essentially endless. With tools like Google Analytics finding blog topics might seem easier then one may realize. The organic search traffic report tells web owners what keywords were used to land on your site. By looking at long tailed keywords (queries with three or more keywords) that start with how, why, when etc. you can immediately identify very qualified readers and even possible customers. Developing properly optimized and original content will further increase visits for these types of qualified queries.

There is another source that is external to your site analytics which would could garner similar but not as finite results. Google Trends allows users to search traffic data on various search terms. It can also populate data regarding related terms receiving traffic, which terms are seeing traffic gains, and in which regions the term is most popular. This data can also be leveraged as basic market research since Google searches account for over 75% of all searches on the web. Coupling these above data sources should yield plenty if ideas for new and engaging blog content for months to come.
